Having successfully designed the first Malin+Goetz retail store, located in the West Village, konyk is currently creating a new retail store in the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

The existing space was previously a barber shop on a corner lot. The design strips the interior space down to the existing brick walls, hardwood floor and tin ceiling. Three zones of space are then inserted—two white bands of pure white formica cabinets and shelving and one wood band of panelized cabinets. The white shell becomes the “warehouse” for stockroom and a order fulfillment, while the wooden box serves as the container for “retail”. Within the wooden box are circular cut-outs that serve as a viewing/display element from which shoppers may also select their desired products. This creates a “boutique within a boutique” while the wooden element visually frames the shopping area, thus presenting the space and product to passers-by.
