X School Manhattan
PS 33 Chelsea School “Architecture of Adjustment” study 1998
The Architecture of Adjustment study was undertaken with a grant from
NYSCA.
The proposal for the Chelsea School (“X” School) in Manhattan
involved adding a significant new structure to an existing mid-century
modern building that is a diagonal object within its square block. The
strategy involved the design of a “ring” of new classrooms,
teacher offices and reading rooms to surround the older building. The
new configuration resulted in three interior courtyard spaces and a “perforated” rooftop
playground.
