Curated by Okwui Enwezor, this preface to Documenta 11 re-examines post Independence African Art movements through the perspective of cultural identity, rather than simply assuming that they are manifestations of a post-colonial reaction. The design attempts to step back from the art and artifacts, allowing them to represent themselves as the multi-dimensional, multi-storied, multi-media mix of political aspirations, social realignments and theatrical productions that mark this underrepresented era in human history.
