field of light
This proposal sites the memorial underneath the covered arcade of the
site, just outside the glass wall of the lobby of 1166 6th Avenue,
running north/south from 45th to 46th Streets. Individual fiber optic
light strands at waist height illuminate the underside of arcade, placing
the names of those lost in the firmament in the ceiling of the arcade.
One can view this field of light from the lobby or one can occupy and
touch each individual light fiber. They gently swing with the movements
of visitors or a soft breeze. This proposal is celebratory, expressing
the joy of their lives and the spirit of life, which they represented
to those around them. Children can come and find joy in their remembrance,
which will be forever among those who have been touched by each and every
life that was lost.
