359 eternal lights
This proposal envisions the transformation of the plaza as a fitting
memorial to the loss of so many lives. In the plaza's place a contemplative
garden of fine black volcanic sand or pebbles is created, with the
stand of the existing redwoods maintaining their quiet strength. In
this calm deep sea of sand and stone, 359 eternal gas flames flicker,
each in their own glass enclosure. This forms a meditative garden,
where one can contemplate the enormous sense of loss and resilience
in the face of such tragedy. Beyond, in the southeast corner of the
site, a single black granite clad wall holds the names of each individual
lost, with a ledge/slot to hold commemorative items, be it flowers,
photographs or favorite mementos, which would be brought by family,
friends and colleagues.
