"Twinkle, Twinkle…"
This proposal is for "Project Glow" for the 9th Annual DUMBO
Arts Under the Bridge Festival. The idea is to use the smallest possible
light source, white colored twinkle lights, which are commonly used for
holiday decorations. We propose densely wrapping the Brooklyn-side tower
of the Manhattan Bridge in these strands of white twinkle lights, thus
outlining the tower in over one million (perhaps more) small twinkling
lights, creating a ghost tower of sorts. The "twinkle tower" would
be visible from Manhattan and announce the Festival to all Lower Manhattan
at night, as well as the immediate neighborhoods in Brooklyn. It would
serve as a lit landmark to those attending evening events in DUMBO. Technical
issues abound, including access to the entire east tower from top to
bottom. It is hoped that workers who have clearance to be on the tower
would be approached to volunteer to string lights (and to take them down
again). These issues would need to be addressed for feasibility, but
if they could be ascertained, this would be a most incredible light tower
announcing the Festival.
